📍Norwegian Trash

EU(European Union)

📍 Introduction:

Norwegian Trash is a circular design studio. We use design to keep waste in a loop. We have existed since 2019. We are one full-time employee and five co-founders that work on the project.

📍 How we started:

Norwegian Trash started after a group of friends and colleagues from ANTI visited Nordic Ocean Watch’ Ocean plastic silo filled with 3 tonnes of ocean plastic. Learned that the plastic in the silo would be shipped abroad to be landfilled or burned if given to the local trash collector. That made us upset, and wanting to show that plastic can be a resource – not just a problem.

📍 On the plastic waste problem in norway:
We got to know about Precious Plastic through one of our founders Maria Berg-Leirvåg. Her masters thesis in product design from the School of Architecture and Design in oslo was about upcycling plastic. She had built a simple Precious Plastic shredder and introduced us to the Precious Plastic universe
In Norway, 93% of all plastic is incinerated for energy. Although the collection of the plastic is good, the actual recycling of plastic as a material is very low. There is a growing focus on circular economy in norway, but a concrete plan is lacking. We are hoping for a tax on virgin plastic, and politics that demand industries to use recycled plastic in the production of their products. If this happen, time will tell. We think the European Union will also play a big part in the transition to a circular economy, also in norway.

📍 Where we get our plastic:

We collect plastic from small businesses in our area (Oslo), but also buy shredded plastic from the precious plastic community in norway (Utoplast i Trondheim and WeCycle in Oslo). We also buy granulated plastic from the fishing and aquaculture industry in northern norway. They give us cheap granulated fishing nets in PP/PE mix, for example.

📍 Our cooperation with ANTI and Nordic Ocean Watch

Norwegian Trash is a child of both Nordic Ocean Watch (NOW) and ANTI. Norwegian Trash was born as a ANTI side project – we got to use our free time while working at ANTI to develop the Norwegian Trash concept and brand. We also share and office with NOW, and several people in NOW cofounded Norwegian Trash and are active in both organizations.

📍 How we make a profit:
Besides being a precious plastic workspace, we work with architects and interior architects making furniture for big building projects. For example, we made 120 school desks for a high school. On half of the school desks, we had a 50x50cm sheet of plastic left in 20mm thickness. To throw this away would make no sense. That’s how we started making furniture and interior objects from this offcuts.

📍 Why black marine waste:
We use black marine plastic because this is a carbon black plastic that cannot be recycled in conventional recycling centres. There is also no demand for black recycled plastics in the recycling industry, and this is strange to us. We wanted to change this, so through our “Resurface” tables we tried giving black plastic waste the value it deserves. We currently buy black plastic pellets from norwegian fishing industry from Oceanize in norway, ship it by boat to The Good Plastic Company which press the pellets to sheets in a modified Precious Plastic Sheet Press. We want to build our own press to make the black sheets 100% local.

📍 Other projects:
We also make lamps – we currently experiment with recycled PLA filament made from sushi boxes. Watch our instagram for our newest products! We also started a web shop – norwegiantrash.store.

📍 Business model:

Our business model is under constant evolution, and we work both as consultants in circularity, sell self-made products and get grants to teach circularity and recycling to norwegian youths and kids. We are currently profitable and growing quickly, this is mostly due to partnering with bigger brands and companies to help them design and produce truly circular plastic products.

📍 Plans for future:
Our plans for the future is to scale up from a small-scale production to an industrial level, without compromising on sustainability and circularity.

📍 Other:
I think it’s fantastic that the Precious Plastic community is growing, and I encourage all PP initiatives to collaborate more with their local municipalities, businesses and exchange knowledge and methods across borders. Keep on recycling!
